Ghost in the Shell
The boarded house stands in the shadow of its own history, a testimony of the mileage it has earned, sheltering social change and civil rights for the area and state.

What Once Was...
The modest house on Oklahoma was a common sight in the Bear's Den community of Indianola. Even before it became the lynchpin of social justice for the county, families frequented its area unbeknownst of its future gravity.

History in the Area not to be Eroded
The Sunflower River runs through the city limits of Indianola and area towns, with a history as murky as the waters in present day --it was even dubbed "America's Most Endangered River" in 2018.

ABOUT
The 1960s was a time of tremendous change for many across this country, and MS was not left out.
When the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, of which Fannie Lou Hamer co-founded, needed a new headquarters in Indianola, MS due to the bombing of the first headquarters (The Freedom School), Estell “Tide” King didn’t hesitate to give them a new home…The Freedom House.

Constructed +/- 1920, The Freedom House survived a bombing attempt because of its location in what is called Bears Den in Indianola, MS. This new headquarters is where members of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party congregated to have meetings, kept records, and to organize their day to day operations of mainly educating and registering African Americans of the Mississippi Delta to vote.

Physical Location
Visionary Thinking
About ½ mile from the BB King Museum, the restored Freedom House would be a great compliment to the heritage and tourist attractions in Indianola, the Mississippi Delta, and the state of Mississippi, as a Indianola Civil Rights Museum.
